How to Measure a T-Shirt

New Post#001

No Need to guess your size. Lay a tee you already love flat, take 2 measurements, and match them to the chart.

Lay it flat. Smooth the wrinkles. That's the whole trick.

Every brand measures a little differently. The medium in your drawer that fits like a second skin and the medium you ordered last spring that swallows you whole were both, technically, mediums. That is the whole problem.

So here is the fix, and it takes about five minutes. Don't guess your size. Measure a shirt you already love, then match it to the chart. You will get it right the first time, and you can go back to the beach.

The Five-Minute Method

Pick the t-shirt in your closet that fits the way you want a shirt to fit. Not the one you wish fit. The one you actually reach for. Lay it flat on a table or the floor, front side up, and smooth out the wrinkles with your hand.

Grab a soft tape measure. Let it rest gently on the fabric — don't pull it tight, and don't let it sag. All our measurements are in inches.

Width — the one that matters most

Measure straight across the chest, about an inch below the armpit seams, from one edge to the other. That single number is your width. Don't double it — our chart lists the flat measurement, so what you just measured is what you compare. (An XS measures 16 inches flat, which is 32 inches all the way around.) If you only measure one thing, measure this.

Length

Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, right where the collar seam meets it, straight down to the bottom hem. If you like a tee that sits below the belt loops, add an inch to whatever your favorite measures.

The Size Chart

All measurements in inches, taken with the garment laid flat. Our tees are Gildan — 100% ring spun cotton, cut as a true-to-size unisex fit.

Size Width Length
XS 16" 26.5"
S 18.25" 26.6"
M 20.25" 28"
L 22" 29.4"
XL 24" 30.75"
2XL 26" 31.6"
3XL 27.5" 32.5"
4XL 30" 34.5"
5XL 32" 35.5"
A note on tolerance. Every size carries a manufacturing tolerance of plus or minus 1 inch. That is normal for cut-and-sew garments, and it is exactly why we would rather you measure than guess.

Caught between two sizes?

Size up. If you run between two sizes, opt for the larger — and for maximum comfort around your middle, size up. Our shirts are cotton, and cotton relaxes into you rather than the other way around. A tee that is a touch generous becomes the one you wear all summer. A tee that is a touch tight becomes the one you fold and forget.

What about shrinkage?

Natural cotton is preshrunk before sewing, so the dramatic first-wash surprise isn't going to happen. But cotton is cotton — expect around 2 to 5% shrinkage if you expose it to high heat. Keeping it out of that range is easy. Wash cold, inside out. Tumble dry low or hang it somewhere with a breeze. Skip the iron over the print.

Do that, and the shirt you get in the mail is the shirt you have in three years. Sand and all.
